If you think about the mechanics of your neck, you’ll realize it’s not surprising how easily it can be injured. It has amazing flexibility, is constantly on the move, has very little muscular support, but has to support the 14 - 16 pounds of your head. It is like balancing a bowling ball on a...

You do not have to be a great scientist like our favorite characters in The Big Bang Theory to view our world with the simple applications such as the laws of mathematics and physics. We know simply that every action has a reaction and our world prefers to be balanced. We solve life’s equations for the answer that balances the problem presented. With this logic are we able to apply it to our health? The answer is absolutely!
Solve for Y
When we are solving for a solution we first look at the factors. One of the essential factors when leading a healthy lifestyle is a healthy spine. Unfortunately many people overlook the benefits of a healthy spine and do not factor in that people who suffer from back pain are generally less healthy than those who do not suffer with back pain.
Law of Subtraction
Low back pain is one of the most common physical ailments with over 80 percent of people in the United States reporting that they have been bothered by this discomfort at some point in their life. For some 50 percent of these people, the pain has severely limited their activities, caused sleep loss, and interfered with their sex life and the ability to control their weight. Further quality of life is subtracted as people suffering from long-term back pain are made to take time off work and can experience large financial losses, as well as the psychological problems that are associated with the healing process for long-term back pain.
Law of Addition
It is extremely important to take good care of your spine and keep it as healthy as possible. By simply adding these beneficial posture and health lifestyle tips as recommended by the American Chiropractic Association, you can help to keep your spine in good shape.
Healthy Diet and Exercise
- People who are overweight or obese tend to suffer more back pain as the extra weight they carry can put unwanted pressure on the muscles, ligaments and tendons in your back.
- A healthy diet and regular exercise is the most efficient and effective way to reduce your weight.
- You should always consult with your Doctor before beginning any new exercise program.
Standing
- When you are standing, try to keep one foot slightly in front of the other, and bend your knees slightly. This position can help to relieve the pressure on your low back.
- Try to avoid bending at the waist for prolonged periods of time. Your lower back muscles can become deconditioned in this position, which often leads to pain.
Lifting
- Whenever you are lifting an object, try to avoid twisting. One of the most dangerous movements for your spine is twisting, especially while lifting.
- If the item you are lifting is too heavy, pushing it is easier on your back than pulling it. Avoid using your back and upper body when pushing the item, try to use your legs.
- If you need to lift a heavy item, get somebody to help you.
Sitting
- Keep your knees slightly higher than your hips, with your head up and back straight.
- Avoid rolling your shoulders forward.
- Try to maintain the natural curve in your low back.
Carrying
- When carrying heavy objects, try to keep them as close to your body as possible.
- Carrying two smaller objects, one in each hand, is much easier to handle than one large object.
Reaching and Bending
- When you are reaching for an object above shoulder level, stand on a stool. If you strain to reach such objects you can not only hurt your mid-back and neck, but you can also bring on shoulder problems.
- Never bend over at the waist to pick up items from the floor. Instead kneel down on one knee and get as close as possible to the item you are lifting. Keep the other foot flat on the floor and then pick the item up.
- To stand keep the item close to your body, and lift with your legs, not your back.
Sleeping
- There are many positions that add extra pressure to your spine while sleeping. One of these positions is stomach-sleeping which makes it difficult to maintain a neutral position of your spine. This position puts pressure on joints and muscles, which can irritate nerves and lead to pain, numbness, and tingling.
- Try placing a pillow in between your legs when sleeping on your side, this can help to reduce the pressure on your spine.
- Never sleep in a position that hurts your spine. More often than not, your body will tell you which position is best.
Give Up Smoking
Smokers suffer from more back pain than non-smokers, and they also heal a lot more slowly when they experience an episode of back pain. This is owing to the chemicals in tobacco smoke that restrict the blood flow to the tissues in and around your spine.
The Health Tutor
If you follow these simple steps you will can begin to experience the benefits of a healthier spine. If you do suffer with back pain we recommend that you call and schedule a consultation today so we may help you find the factors that are causing the imbalance and set a course for calculated winning health!

One of the most beautiful sites for many of us is the majestic colors that adore our trees as the sign of the autumn season. As we know that this beauty is brief for the trees soon lose their leaves and decorate our lawns with piles of wonderful less exciting dead debris. That beauty also comes at a price for our back, neck, and shoulders as we sweep, gather, and dispose of the leaves more than once this season. So if your home is subjected to leaves falling each year, follow these helpful tips and avoid the consequences of leaf-raking on the body, including strain and pain in the neck, the upper and lower back, and the shoulders.
Helpful Raking Tips
- Stretch before you commence work, and throughout, performing knee-to-chest stretches, trunk rotations, and side bends with hands above the head, palms up and fingers weaved. Spend 10 to 15 minutes all together on your stretching. Intersperse the work with a short walk to get the circulation going throughout the body, and do the same stretches as a cool-down once you have finished.
- As you rake, stand erect with your head held up.
- Use a “scissors” stance when raking; that is, keep one foot forward for a few minutes, then swap and put the back foot forwards.
- When bending to pick up leaves or any other trash, bend at the knees not the waist.
- When mowing the lawn, put your whole body into the pushing, not just your arms and back.
- When starting a mower with a pull cord, bend at the knees and extend up in a smooth motion. Do not twist at the waist or yank at the cord.
- Keep well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and wear a hat in the sun. Always wear shoes and protective glasses, and use gloves if your hands are likely to receive rough treatment that might raise blisters. When using loud machinery, employ ear-protectors, and if you suffer from asthma or allergies, use a mask.
- Try to use ergonomically-friendly tools that help take the strain from your muscles and joints.
- An ice-pack can be used to ease any discomfort you feel following raking or other outdoor work.
Raking in the Benefit!
Enjoy the season but remember to follow the tips to rake in the benefits! If your discomfort does not dissipate within two to three days please contact your doctor of chiropractic.

Are you one of the new generation that suffers with arthritis but refuses to accept to sit on the sideline? If so read on!
Understanding the Arthritis Myths
Years ago, arthritis was considered an inherent part of the aging process and a signal to a patient that it’s time to slow down. But not so anymore. Recent research and clinical findings show that there is much more to life for arthritis patients than the traditional recommendation of bed rest and drug therapy.
The two most often false misconceptions about arthritis are that ‘you have to live with it’ and ‘it is a part of ageing’.
The word “arthritis” means “joint inflammation” and is often used in reference to the pain affecting a certain part of the body, for example the neck or low back. Arthritis and Arthritic pain does effect up to 80% of people over 50 years of age, but not all. If it were true that arthritis was due to ageing, then because the entire spine is the same age, there should be the same inflammation affecting the entire musculoskeletal system in all of us and not just in one area of our body. Therefore, there must be another cause rather than the sole effect of aging.
As spinal and musculoskeletal specialists, we look at x-rays of the spine everyday. What we observe is that Arthritis often develops in the spine in areas where there have been misalignments , or areas where a trauma has occurred and left untreated over a long period of time. For instance if you suffered back or neck pain from a car accident, sporting injury, or even held an improper posture at work for a long period of time, over the years that area of the spine can and will degenerate and your bodies protective mechanism of swelling, arthritis, in time will result.
Now that we can identify the most logical cause, let us dispel the next best myth which is that ‘we need to accept and live with our pain’. In the traditional treatment of arthritis, anti-inflammatories are most frequently prescribed to patients which are unfortunately linked to dangerous side effects such as blurred vision, increased blood pressure, digestive ulcers and bleeding, kidney problems, dizziness and even possibly death. In comparison, our team specializes in techniques and treatments that address the cause of the arthritic pain directly rather than simply masking the symptom of the inflammation.
The Doctor’s Prospective
A normal healthy spine will allow all the nerves of the spinal column to exit the spine and allow the body to function the way it is supposed to in a strong and healthy way. A person will show a normal healthy curve in the spine, their disc spaces will be even, and bones will be smooth and well defined.
If someone is in what is called a Phase 1 of spinal degeneration they will have a loss of the normal spinal curve, their x-rays will show disc, joint, muscle, and nerve damage. They will also have distorted posture, such as a high shoulder, rotated pelvis or forward head posture. These people will have less energy, their height will be diminished, and health problems will be something they put up with while having the false perception that it is normal aging.
When someone is in a Phase 2 of spinal degeneration they will have increased spinal decay, disc narrowing, bone deformation and spinal canal narrowing (stenosis). These people will have a more common complaints of aches and pains, such as back pain, neck pain, sciatic pain (sometimes daily). They will be fatigued quite frequently, and they are realizing that their health is impeding them from partaking in the activities the would like to participate and enjoy.
When someone is in a Phase 3 of spinal degeneration they will have greater postural imbalance, increasing nerve damage, advanced bone deformation, and extreme loss of flexibility. These people will have a serious health situation and will commonly be on a lot of medication and find that they are unable to participate in simple healthy activities. Their quality of life is very low.
