The Chiropractic Solution for Sciatica and Pins and Needles

Pin and Needles New Fairfield CT Sciatica
Have you ever experienced sciatica or pins in needles? Where the pain seems to radiate down your leg to your foot or down your arm to your hand and maybe into only two fingers.  These examples may not be the most commonly thought of when we use the term nerve pain, but it causes extreme misery and discomfort for those that experience it.

Understanding Radiating Pain

Radiating pain is actually caused when a nerve or nerve root is experiencing pressure, whether it’s a result of spinal misalignments or from inflammation. One cause is a herniated disc. This spinal compression creates a radiating pain because it has bulged out of its normal place and may be exerting pressure on a nerve root extending from the spinal cord.

The nerves that run the length of the spinal cord from neck to tailbone and branch out to the left and right are called the radicular nerves. When these are injured or compressed they are more likely to radiate pain than the other types of nerves in our body. If there is a neck injury, for example, pain may radiate down the arm to the fingertips. Some people may think that are experiencing radiating pain, but the pain can often be due to myofascial trigger points that cause a more diffuse pain that seems to radiate out from one area. This is caused by muscles that are too tense and scar tissue that has built up trapping nerves in the muscles, tendons and ligaments.

Our Team Can Help!

A chiropractic adjustment can address any spinal misalignments that may be impinging on spinal nerves, helping to take the pressure off the nerve and thus reducing pain. In addition, many chiropractors tend to use additional therapies that can help to free trapped nerves.

If you are suffering from radiating pain or radiating pain like symptoms don’t hesitate to schedule an in depth examination and consultation. Our expert team looks forward to assessing and preparing our best recommendation just for you.  Do not miss the full spectrum care that awaits you to not only restore your health but revitalize your health to the optimal level.

Our Bodies Shock Absorbers – Spinal Discs and Back Pain

Herniated Disc and Back Pain New Fairfield CTNearly every adult today has experienced some form of back pain in their lifetime. Whether the pain was caused by lifting something awkwardly or from strenuous activity. More often than not this pain will subside after a period of rest, if it is purely muscular pain. However, spinal disc injuries cause more of an extreme pain and are usually described in many different ways. The pain experienced by a spinal disc injury has also been compared to the pain of child birth. The understanding of what the discs in our back do and how they work are extremely important in treating spinal disc injuries.

What is the purpose of Spinal Discs?

Situated in between our vertebrae are pads called the intervertebral discs. These discs contain a gel-like soft center and a stronger outer shell. They are attached to our vertebrae and act as separators. These discs are extremely effective shock-absorbers which offer a guard to prevent the bones rubbing against each other when we move. The discs in our spine keep it strong and supple.

A protruding disc occurs when the gel in the disc begins to push out against the ligamentous wall of the disc, but does not compromise or tear the wall. Two thirds of pain free adults have one or more protuding discs within their spine. A herniated disc is when the gel in the disc pushes out and starts to tear through the first layers of the ligamentous wall. This movement of gel can cause irritation of the nerve, inflammation and often severe pain.

One of the more serious conditions is called disc extrusion, sometimes known as a ruptured disc. This occurs when the gel of the disc breaks all the way through the ligamentous wall. When this gel leaks out of the disc it can cause extreme back pain and significantly reduced movement.
