Put Mr. Sandman on Speed Dial – No Back Pain Solution

Sleep Problems New Fairfield CT Back PainAre you ready to experience the great sleep you had as a child?  Of course you are so read on to find out how you can set Mr. Sandman back on speed dial!

Trouble Sleeping?

If you have trouble getting quality sleep, rest assured you’re not alone. “Rest assured” is probably a poor reference here… However, surveys into sleeping problems reveal that between forty and sixty percent of adults don’t feel that they sleep as well as they should or would like to. It is often down to stress in a variety of fashions: money, family, work, aches and pains, general discomfort, poor quality pillow or bed, or a myriad of other reasons.

Good quality sleep is crucial to maintaining good health. It allows your body to recharge and regenerate, and gives your mind the break it needs to stay focused through the next day.

Many people who experience problems sleeping will resort to sleeping pills, but research shows these do not provide the truly quality periods of deep sleep that we need, and anyone who’s used them will testify to how fuzzy they can make you feel in the morning.

Chiropractic Works!

Doctors of chiropractic are trained in all aspects of creating wellness, and can offer advice to help the troubled sleeper kick the meds and enjoy a naturally-induced slumber that refreshes as it should.

Let’s begin with a few tips to create a better environment for quality sleep:

  • Exercise regularly, and preferably in the morning. Evening exercise can raise your heartbeat into a range that may prevent you settling down to sleep. Try to leave a 2 to 3 hour gap between finishing exercise and going to bed.
  • Limit caffeine consumption later in the day and especially before bed. That means not just coffee, but caffeinated sodas and also tea. Counteract the effect of any such beverage during the day by drinking an equal amount of water.
  • If you need water during the night, drink it at room temperature not cold, which can upset the digestion and therefore your sleep.
  • Try not to eat dinner later than 6pm, again because this sets off the digestive functions which need to be settled for you to sleep well.
  • Try to go to bed and wake up at the same times to program your system.
  • Sleep in a cool room and as dark as possible. Any light, even through closed eyelids, triggers hormones to be produced that tell you to wake up.

Essential Tools

Make sure you give yourself the best chance of sleep by choosing a good mattress and pillow.  Choosing the wrong one will lead to more unwanted neck and back pain.

The mattress should provide even support for the body and maintain the spine in its natural alignment. This is subjective for each person. To give an idea of whether it feels okay for you, it is recommended that you lie down on it in the store for 3 to 5 minutes. Any longer and you may be over run salesmen.

Best Mattress Recommendations

  • Support should be uniform from head to toe, with no unsupportive gaps.
  • To firm up a soft mattress if you have back pain, put a board underneath it, but only until you feel better. Too-firm mattresses are not good.
  • Flip your mattress, or rotate it head to toe every few months to prevent any part becoming permanently indented.
  • When you start waking up feeling achy, that may be a sign you need a new mattress. Mattress life varies according to the quality of the build and how it is used.
  • Your mattress may need changing sooner if you experience changes in your life that affect you physically: weight gain or loss or injuries, for example, or anything that affects the weight or the placement of weight on your mattress. Even a new partner!
  • To soften up a too-hard mattress if you don’t want to splurge on a new one, there are memory-foam toppers available that will certainly help.

Proper Head Support

A bad pillow can negate all the good work performed every night by a good mattress. The aim of a pillow is to keep the cervical spine (the neck) aligned with the thoracic and lumbar sections of the spine (the chest and the lower back).

  • As a guide, a pillow should be able to keep your head and neck level with your mid and lower spine when you are lying on your side. If you lie on your back, it should be able to keep your head and neck level with your upper back and spine. Any deviation from these that angles your head and neck wrongly means you need to find another pillow.
  • Foam pillows are good so long as the material is firm enough to provide proper support and not squish away to nothing under your weight.
  • You should not need to put your arm under your pillow to get it to the right height, nor bend it over on itself to double its thickness. Those are good indicators your pillow is wrong.
  • Like a mattress, it is not a one-size-fits-all situation with pillows. Choose the one that is right for your shape.

The Frozen Shoulder and Neck Pain Blues

Frozen Shoulder New Fairfield CT Neck PainThe dog days of summer are here!  At this time of year we should be in full swing and enjoying the benefits of the sun and outdoor activities.  Unfortunately many of us are sitting on the sidelines or taking medication to play through the pain.  One main culprit is neck pain and what is described as a “frozen shoulder”.   If you or a loved one are sitting on the bench missing the fun due to this condition – read on!

What is a Frozen Shoulder?

A Frozen Shoulder or, Adhesive capsulitis, is a condition in which the shoulder cannot be moved normally due to pain and inflammation in the joint capsule of the shoulder.  Limited range of motion not only occurs when the individual tries to move the shoulder, but even if shoulder movement is forced.  The condition may arise due to no known cause other than lack of use of the shoulder joint.

What Causes A Frozen Shoulder?

A Frozen Shoulder is caused by inflammation, scarring or thickening that occurs within the capsule of the shoulder joint.  The capsule of ligaments in the shoulder joint allows the bones in the shoulder to freely move within the joint and if this becomes inflamed, the bones in the shoulder may have difficulty moving or may not be able to move at all.  In many cases, there is no known cause for the inflammation and the condition arises from lack of use of the shoulder joint, but some causes that can lead to the condition include diabetes, shoulder trauma or injury, shoulder surgery, tendonitis, bursitis, cervical disc disease, chronic inflammatory arthritis, hyperthyroidism or any type of surgery located in the chest or breast.

Symptoms

The primary symptoms of a frozen shoulder are pain, stiffness and limited shoulder mobility.  In most cases, the condition begins with pain that prevents you from using your shoulder and moving your arm in a normal fashion.  The pain may have some underlying cause or no cause at all.  As you cease to move your arm because of the pain or if you keep it immobilized for too long (such as by putting it in a sling), the shoulder becomes stiff and eventually you cannot perform certain functions or movements.  The main difference between frozen shoulder and other conditions that may cause pain, stiffness and limited mobility is that with frozen shoulder, the doctor cannot make the shoulder joint move even by manually moving it.

How is It Diagnosed?

The first step in diagnosing a frozen shoulder will include taking a complete medical history and physical examinations.  Questions will be asked related to when the symptoms began, what activities caused the symptoms, and how limited the movement of the shoulder is.  The shoulder will be examined and range of motion tests will be performed.  The doctor will try to move the shoulder joint manually and if that cannot be done, a diagnosis of frozen shoulder is made.  X-rays or an MRI may be ordered to determine if there is any noticeable cause of the immobility, but in most cases of frozen shoulder there are no specific findings, although shrinkage of the shoulder capsule or scar tissue may be apparent.

Heal Like A Pro

New Fairfield CT Heal like a ProWhether it is the roar of the crowds in the stadium or just in your local gym or field we love to play like our heroes – the pros.  Unfortunately,  the downside is that sometimes our over zealous activity can lead to injury, either because we are new to it, we push beyond our limits, or through a simple accident.

Injuries The Commonly Occur

The most common sports injuries occur to the ankles, knees, shoulders, elbows, and spine.

Broken bones can obviously occur when playing sport or exercising, but the more common injuries are those that happen to the muscles, tendons, and ligaments – the tendons attaching the muscles to the bones, and the ligaments attaching the bones to each other.

When you twist or overextend a joint, a strain can occur, which is a tear to the muscle or tendon, or a sprain can occur, which is a tear to the ligament. The damage these inflict varies in severity from a few torn or stretched fibers to a complete tear right through the structure. The latter will often require surgery to repair. Also susceptible to tearing are the intervertebral discs, which are the ligaments between the spinal vertebrae that act as shock absorbers. When this happens the disc will bulge and/or become herniated.

Over-training is a common cause of a condition called tendonitis, which is one of the so-called “overuse syndromes”. This happens when the joint is overworked and the connecting tendons become inflamed, causing pain and dysfunction.   Stress or fatique fractures may also occur as a result of repetitive strain and activity.

The Exam and Common Treatments

Sports injuries are normally easy to diagnose because athletes have a heightened sense of physical awareness. A physical examination will often confirm the injury, but x-rays may also be ordered if the injury is suspected of being more serious, like a fracture.

TIPS

For minor injuries please follow these simple tips to help you recover faster:

Relax and Elevate: 48 hours rest and/or immobilization is normally enough, unless the injury is more severe. Too much rest can work against recovery in many cases, and can even be harmful. The sooner normal function is restored, the better, provided the process is not so hurried as to cause further damage through over-zealousness. Raising the injured limb above the level of the heart is thought to be helpful in reducing swelling. Your doctor of chiropractic can advise on the optimum times for rest and recuperation.

Ice:  Ice can help to reduce the inflammation and speed healing.

Compression:  Swelling may be controlled somewhat through compression of the injured area, as advised by your doctor of chiropractic.

Pain Relief: According to recent research, the use of certain nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should be limited as they may in fact retard the body’s natural healing process, causing a longer recuperation than necessary.

Joint manipulation: Recent research has also shown that joint manipulation, as practiced by your doctor of chiropractic, can help with certain types of injury, lowering pain levels and speeding recovery.

Being Proactive: Many sports injuries are preventable through the use of proper physical conditioning, including warm-up and cool-down routines, and correct techniques when practicing the activity. It may also be the case that safety equipment is available for your particular sport or exercise which will help lower the chances of injury. Keeping hydrated with a good intake of water also guards against injuries by feeding the tissues what they most require to function optimally.
