A New Health Warning Label For Chairs?

Neck Pain New Fairfield CT Pain Relief
Ads, Glorious Ads!  How would we know what we want with out being told, sung to, danced, designed, and trailered.  But, on the flip side how far has society gone on adding warning labels to everything?  Now its chairs due to poor health conditions that can be attributed to habitual sitters (just like smokers).  What’s next – vegetables?

The Next New Label

Years ago we attributed the most unhealthy people were those who had careers where auto or truck travel over distance was required.  The hours, weeks, months , and years with this requirement in this career in a normally unhealthy position was one of the largest contributors to poor health rather than the first thought of impact or accident.  As the computer age dawned and the virtual digital age became the ruler of careers and now for many virtual lives and social connections our time sitting has more than tripled and so has our health problems.  These health problems range from neck pain, back pain, headaches, sciatica to onset of disease processes including obesity. Although one solution may be to reactivate your Wii Fit,  the other more realistic solution should be to take heed to the warning that prolonged sitting has detrimental effects on our health and to take responsibility for our actions rather than banning the chair.

Medical Studies

In a study performed at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Louisiana, a Physiologist, Marc Hamilton, discovered that when he prevented lab mice from standing up, an enzyme that burns fat gets turned off, which can lead to weight gain.  “This enzyme is virtually shut off within hours of not standing, completely independent of diet, completely independent of weight changes.” Hamilton further stated that, “Sitting has become the most common human behavior; literally, it outstrips the amount of time we spend sleeping.”  Drawing a parallel of sitting to a new form of smoking – an occurrence that was at one time was so common, acceptable and advertised that people were reluctant to see the health hazard it posed.  The two primary parallel components being that both smoking and sitting are silent and take years to develop serious disease processes.

To add more specific facts, another study published by the American Journal of Epidemiology showed that sitting for long stretches, more than six hours a day, can make someone at least 18 percent more likely to die from diabetes, heart disease and obesity than those sitting less than three hours a day.

Accountability Tips

At our practice we see how human behaviors shape our society. The evolution of technology has impacted the way we use our bodies. Humans have moved from the active life of being hunter-gatherers to becoming agriculturalists.  The Industrial Revolution moved us to factories and the ‘technological revolution’ landed us behind desks and into the culture of sitting too much and living a sedentary lifestyle that is already contributing to sickness, pain and dis-ease.

The poor posture and sitting pandemic is serious and going to have predictably devastating effects on your health and the health of the next generation unless we change our behaviors.

Computers and technology are here to stay. So ergonomics  and the accountability of our actions will be crucial to gaining our freedom back.

Here are three simple posture tips you can begin today:

  • Get a standing desk so you can do your work standing
  • Take regular breaks. Get up every 30-60 minutes to stretch for 30-60 seconds.
  • Do not sit down on the sofa after your evening meal. Stand and stretch for 10 minutes. Bonus!  It will also stimulate your metabolism!

How Should I Manage My Pain?

New Fairfield How Should I Manage My Pain “Where should I go to relieve my neck and low back pain?”  A question that is asked far to often.

When you suffer with neck and low back  pain you should consider an evaluation first by a qualified  chiropractor.   The majority of these spinal complaints are caused by irritation and inflammation of muscles, tendons, and ligaments that not only help create the structure of the spinal column but  provide for the full mobility of the spinal vertebrae.  By locating regions of your spine where mobility is decreased, your chiropractor is able  identify the areas that are in need of treatment. The treatment includes not only restoring mobility to the spinal joints, but through the chiropractic care the neck and back pain are eliminated from source of the problem.

An additional benefit of chiropractic care is the reduction of pressure  and irritation on spinal nerves. Irritation and inflammation of spinal soft tissues is not only one cause of the pain but  negatively affects the normal function of the spinal nerves. The compression on the delicate spinal nerve strands reduces or may completely inhibit the transmission of  information from your brain to the rest of your body. The result may include  a wide range of health problems. By addressing the source of many of these problems, chiropractic care helps contribute to your overall health and well-being.

Immediate and Serious Physical Problems

No one wants to constantly worry. We certainly don’t want to visit our chiropractor or family doctor for every ache and pain. But eventually we all experience physical problems and it may be difficult to know how to solve them. Some problems are immediate and serious. If you suddenly experience crushing chest pain and radiating pain down your left arm, possibly with nausea, profuse perspiration, and a feeling of impending doom, you know you have to call “911” immediately. If you awaken in the middle of the night with an intense, deep, sharp pain in your lower right abdomen, accompanied by vomiting and a fever, you also know that you need to go to the Emergency Room right away. In these exceptional cases, however, most people know which steps to take. What should you do when your pain is not clear-cut and dramatic, as it is in a heart attack or acute appendicitis? General guidelines are available which can be applied in many situations.

Overall, pain is a warning sign, but many problems that cause pain can resolve on their own.  For example, you may twist an ankle on your daily walk. It may hurt to put weight on that ankle and there may even be a bit of swelling;  however within two days your ankle is much better. There was initial pain attributing to a soft tissue injury, possibly involving muscles, tendons, and/or ligaments. However, the injury was not so severe that your body’s ability to self-heal could not manage the situation. In the case of a greater degree of initial pain and more swelling, or if improvement was not being obtained within 48 hours, a visit to your chiropractor would be appropriate. In borderline situations involving musculoskeletal pain, and whether you choose to seek professional advice depends on your intuition and level of pain tolerance. If you think something is “wrong”, regardless of the nature of the injury or the intensity of your pain, you should seek professional assistance.

Obtaining the Expert Information You Need

With some categories of physical problems, making the time to visit your chiropractor is the best course of action.  Repetitive episodes of spinal pain should always be evaluated by your chiropractor. A severe headache should probably lead to a chiropractic examination, especially if you’ve never before had the type and intensity of pain that you’re currently experiencing. Persistent radiating pain into an arm or a leg, accompanied by numbness and tingling, can also be evaluated by your chiropractor. Again, if discomfort continues and you can’t clearly explain to yourself why you’re having the pain that you’re having, the best thing to do is to make an appointment to see your doctor, that is, your chiropractor or your family physician.  Most importantly you want to obtain expert information and advice, and to receive treatment if needed with the most helpful instructions on how to care for yourself in the coming days, weeks, or months ahead.

Throw Your Back into It!

New Fairfield housework

Not many people like doing housework. For most, it’s a real pain in the aaah … what’s the word? Sacroiliac. But it’s not just the disruption it causes to your longed-for life of leisure; it really can be a pain. Literally.

The activities you carry out around the house may not seem too physically demanding, but if you don’t pay attention to how you are doing them, even something like washing the dishes can put a strain on your back and cause debilitating pain.

One of the chief culprits in housework, and generally, is lifting. It doesn’t matter what you are picking up, if you do it incorrectly you can injure yourself. The correct approach is to bend at the knees, not from the waist. The item you’re picking up should be held close in to the body, and there should be no twisting, which can hurt the spine; if you want to turn in another direction, take a step that way once you have straightened up.

Tips to Save Your Back

Here are some tips that will help you take the strain out of your household duties:

  • Washing the dishes, try opening the cabinet under the sink, bending a knee and placing a foot on the raised shelf inside. Also try leaning forward against the counter to transfer some of your weight forward for a little support.
  • Similarly, with ironing, use a small stool and raise one foot onto it to take some of the strain from your back.
  • When using a vacuum cleaner, adopt the same stance you would see combatants take in a fencing match, one foot stepped back behind the other. Move your weight from one foot to the other as you push the machine back and forward, and pivot on the back foot when you wish to turn.
  • Even talking on the telephone can be a problem if you are prone to cradling the handset between your ear and your raised shoulder. Quasimodo was the first one to notice this. The spinal joints in the neck and upper back can lock when you do this. Fortunately, as humans, we have opposing thumbs and can very easily hold objects in our hands. Either that, or use a speaker phone.
  • Watching TV with your head resting on the arm of the sofa is not good, because the angle is too acute for your neck joints.
  • When your back does start to hurt, use a cold pack. To avoid leaping through the ceiling, first moisten a towel with warm water before encasing the cold pack in it. That way, there will be a gradual transition from warm to cold. A bag of frozen peas is a good alternative, and is easily moldable to your contours.
  • If you suffer with pain for a couple of days without relief, or you feel weakness, numbness or tingling in your hands or feet, a visit to your doctor of chiropractic is in order.
