Chiropractic care is primarily designed to improve the flexibility of spinal joints. A loss of the spinal vertebral motion can lead to spinal muscle tightness and pain, which generally results in various other physical problems. For example, headaches, lack of restful sleep, and increased irritability may all have a link with a loss of spinal...

Speeding Up Recovery Time
For most people, recovering from a broken bone is an exercise in patience. For an active person, being told that you have to significantly reduce or cease activity in order to let the bone heal is equivalent to torture. However, there are a few things you can do to help speed the healing process so you can get back to your normal activities as soon as possible.
Stop taking NSAIDs (Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) for Pain Relief
When cells are damaged in a fracture, large amounts of prostaglandins are released. Prostaglandins are a group of lipids made at sites of tissue damage or infection that are involved in dealing with injury and illness. They control processes such as inflammation, blood flow, the formation of blood clots and the induction of labor. Although this is what causes you to feel the pain, the production of these lipids are also instrumental to the early stages of tissue repair.
Here is the catch. In order to alleviate pain, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are prescribed to stop the action of prostaglandins, but the prostaglandins are quintessential to the healing process. The best suggestion would be stop taking the NSAIDs as soon as possible after suffering a broken bone. Alternatively, you could take a non-NSAID pain medication such as acetaminophen for pain relief, for it does not have the same effect on prostaglandins.
Stop Smoking
The broken bones of people who smoke take longer to heal. The smoke reduces blood flow, therefore reduces the amount of nutrients and oxygen getting to the injury site. The chemicals released in the blood from smoking damage the cells that form bone. This process and significantly decrease healing time or prevent complete healing altogether.
Get more Calcium, Magnesium, Vitamin D and Vitamin K
These vitamins and minerals are all integral to healthy bone growth. We have all heard about how important calcium is in the diet, but if you take a lot of calcium without accompanying it with magnesium and vitamins D and K, much of that calcium will not be absorbed by your bones. Dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, collard greens and Swiss chard are among the best sources of not only calcium, but magnesium and vitamin K as well. If you live in a sunny climate, you can get a good supply of vitamin D by sitting in the sun for 15-20 minutes a day with arms and legs exposed and using no sunblock. For those who live in less sun-drenched locations (and those of us waiting out the winter months), you can get vitamin D from fortified milk products or you can take a vitamin D supplement.
Reduce Your Sugar and Caffeine
Caffeine and sugar both increase the excretion of calcium from the bones by 25-50 percent. So try avoid the comfort foods!
Increase Your Intake of Protein Rich Foods
Nearly half of the compounds that make up your bones are comprised of protein. In order to give your bones the building blocks they need to speed healing and minimize further bone loss, incorporate more healthy protein into your diet, such as beans, nuts and fish or chicken.
Healing takes time but if you keep these simple tips in mind, you may find yourself up and about before you know it!

Why would a parent not take a child to see a chiropractor? The basic answer might come down to no information or incorrect information.
Here are some of the most common reasons why not:
- They don’t know about Chiropractic
- They don’t know about the potential benefits of Chiropractic
- They think that a Chiropractic adjustment might be too rough for a child and cause pain or damage
Once a person finds out about Chiropractic and begins to understand its benefits, it is point number 3 that must be understood and dispelled, as apparently, some parents think that a Chiropractic adjustment will be “too rough” for their youngster.
Chiropractors understand that all bodies are different and tailor their adjustments and the amount of pressure required based on the individual they are treating. A big football playing man in his 20s, a little old woman in her 70s and a child of 10, will all be looked at and evaluated for their individual needs.
In this way, it could be said that a Chiropractic adjustment can be as individual as a handshake. A strong man shaking hands with another strong man will give him a lot more pressure than if the same man was shaking hands with his grandmother or the child. When parents realize this and bring their child in for an adjustment, the results can be quite remarkable. Consider this case of a 7-year-old girl.
This child had been suffering from asthma since the age of 4. By the time she came to see a chiropractor, she had been treated medically with 10 different medications. Attacks of coughs and wheezing were daily occurrences. Physical activity was almost out of the question. Emergency room visits sometimes reached 5 per year. A test of lung capacity revealed she was operating at about 50 percent of her lung capacity.
An exam by her chiropractor revealed subluxations (partial dislocations) in the vertebrae at the middle of her spine. An individual program was tailored to handle these restrictions. With just one adjustment, some of the tightness in her chest disappeared and her coughing was reduced. After just 4 weeks of treatment, she was able to put aside her inhaler and get back to participating in swimming and running sports. After 3 months, her lung capacity was just about normal and all medications were stopped.
Had her parents avoided taking her to a chiropractor because of a fear that an adjustment might be too rough and cause her pain, the child might well be on her way to a dozen more medications, further restrictions of activity and even worse breathing problems.
Is Chiropractic for children too? By all means. Miracles can occur each and every day in Chiropractic with the right adjustment, tailored to the individual’s size, age, shape and need.

Two months before the 2003 New York City Marathon, Sean Combs, “Puff Daddy,” decided he was going to complete the 26.2 mile course through Manhattan.
After barely making it through a two-mile training session, Combs realized he needed help. He called upon Drew DeMann, DC, MA, CCSP, his “personal sports physician.”
DeMann provided Chiropractic care to Combs in the weeks leading up to the marathon. DeMann reported that Combs had a number of physical ailments in his back, neck and knees.
Chiropractic was used to prepare him for the race.
In addition to the psychological barriers and fatigue associated with running a marathon, Combs also experienced stiff joints and low back pain.
An aggressive approach to treating and combating the muscle fatigue was taken in order for Combs to complete his rigorous training sessions.
As a result of care, Combs was able to complete the 26.2 mile race in just four hours, 14 minutes and 54 seconds, placing in the top 32% of participants.
Combs recognized how Chiropractic prepared him for the race. He mentioned Chiropractic several times and brought his Chiropractor to the forefront during the press conference following the event.
Combs gave special thanks to DeMann and to Chiropractic for getting him through such a difficult race.
