Take Back Pain Out of Your Career

Back Pain New Fairfield CT ErgonomicsWe are all familiar with the adage of “walking a mile in another man’s shoes” but have we truly wanted to experience walking with another man’s spine?  In this case we are referring to experiencing the physical strain on a body as we are working in our respective careers.  It is no surprise to anyone that carpenters, moving men and plumbers have high rates of spine and low back injuries as they are lifting heavy loads and performing awkward tasks for long hours. But with spine injuries and dysfunction as the second leading cause of lost work in adults and the greatest cost expenditure, which careers are affecting our bodies the most these days?

Research shows that there is as much spine and low back episodes between blue as white collar workers.  While this may surprise you that accountants and lawyers are as beat up as guys that haul garbage cans.

But never fear here are helpful tips and solutions for taking the pain out of your indoor desk jockey careers.

Quick Office Manual for Proper Desk Operating Procedures

  • Choose a desk that is the proper height. All things on your desk should be within easy reach.
  • Your feet should be touching the floor, with the legs and body forming an angle of 90 to 110 degrees.
  • Keep your body straight with the head and neck upright and looking forward, not to the side. Do not hunch over or slouch.
  • Adjust the height of your monitor. Look forward with your head in a neutral position. Your eyes should be at the same height as the top of the monitor. Leaning your head forward can lead to headaches and neck pain.
  • When typing, keep your wrists straight, your shoulders perpendicular to the floor, and your forearms parallel to the floor.
  • When reading at your desk, use a book stand or a paper holder to keep your eyes in the same neutral position you use to read documents on your computer monitor.
  • When talking on the phone, use a headset, when possible, especially if you talk on the phone for prolonged periods. Holding the phone between your shoulder and cheek will only lead to neck pain and headaches.
  • Stand up and stretch your legs with a short walk about every 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Take micro-breaks often, stretching your neck, arms and wrists, back, and legs. Simple stretches include neck rotations, fist clenches, arm dangles, and shoulder shrugs.
  • If your eyes concentrate on a particular object for long periods, relax your eye muscles by shifting your focus from objects that are close to you to objects that are farther away. This helps reduce eye strain.
  • When using a mouse do not move the mouse with just your wrist. Use your entire arm and shoulder. Don’t rest your arm on the edge of the desk while manipulating the mouse. Hold the mouse loosely. Keep your wrist relaxed. Don’t hold it up or down; instead, hold it in a neutral (straight) position Move away from the mouse several times per hour and move your wrists, arms, and shoulders around.

Trouble Shooting

If you are already experiencing back pain here are four advice tips to help get your spine back into fully operational.

Tip 1: Consult our expert team.

Our expert team has been designed to help determine the cause of your back pain.  After an  in-depth consultation and examination we design our best recommendation for helping you reboot your health towards optimal efficiency.

Tip 2:  Break the bad habits that cause spinal misalignments.

It is very common for lower back and spinal problems to start with some type of injury or trauma associated with a fall, car accident, or sports injury.  But more often, Lower Back Pain results from the combination of our daily bad habits.  Our work positions, seated postures, and sleep habits and surfaces can often aggravate or even cause our back problems.  Learning and adopting the correct postures for sitting, sleeping, and working, many people have been able to successfully accelerate their healing process.

Tip 3:  Utilize specific chiropractic adjustments as an option to correct the root cause of the lower back pain.

Chiropractic Adjustments are shown to produce the best results for patients struggling with lower back pain, sciatica and disc problems.  Adjustments are most effective when they are delivered with specificity (at the right place) and in rhythm (at the right time).

Tip 4:  Add specific exercises that have been proven to strengthen the muscles and soft tissues that have weakened over time with lower back issues.

As part of your active role in healing, you can strengthen the supportive structures around your spine through specific exercises.  These movements target the true core elements associated with lower back pain as your muscles will tighten around joints that are injured and unstable. The basic flexibility will return naturally as your tissues heal and the nerve pressure is reduced.

Breaking Bad in Pain Relief

New Fairfield CT Pain Management
The word on the streets is that the most abused drugs these days are found not being creatively cooked or grown but dispensed or bought at a convenience store near you.  The drugs that are most often misused are not for recreational use but for the reduction of pain.  The same pain that  is the body’s designed warning system that acts as a warning that a limit of some type has been reached in terms of function and that the body is not equipped to handle the activity and is unable to adapt further.  Unfortunately far to many of us rely on these drugs to ignore or mask the pain until the point of no return.

Drug of Choice

Acetaminophen, sold under the brand name Tylenol, among others, may be among the most dangerous medicines on the market. That’s alarming as almost every household has a bottle of this and does not think twice about using it.  Acetaminophen overdose is actually the leading cause for calls to Poison Control Centers across the U.S., with upwards of 100,000 cases per year. This includes 56,000 emergency room visits, 2,600 hospitalizations and an estimated 458 deaths due to acute liver failure.

Acetaminophen can be much more dangerous than you previously suspected because it can be toxic to your liver even at recommended doses when taken daily for just a couple of weeks.  The risk of severe liver damage and/or death increases significantly if you:

  1. Take more than one regular strength (325 mg) acetaminophen when combined with a narcotic analgesic like codeine or hydrocodone.
  2. Take more than the prescribed dose of an acetaminophen-containing product in a 24-hour period.
  3. Take more than one acetaminophen-containing product at the same time.
  4. Drink alcohol while taking an acetaminophen product.

Alarming News

Last year, PBS News reported that 1,500 deaths over the past 10 years have been linked to taking a little bit more acetaminophen than the recommended dosage.  The problem is that acetaminophen is considered relatively safe when taken as recommended; the margin between a safe dose and potentially lethal one is extremely small.  An FDA advisory panel actually recommended adding a warning label about liver damage to acetaminophen as early as 1977, but it was not done until 2009.

On January 14, this year, the FDA finally issued a statement urging doctors and other health professionals to discontinue prescribing and dispensing prescription combination drug products that contain more than 325 milligrams (mg) of acetaminophen per tablet, capsule, or other dosage unit. They go on to state that there is no evidence that by taking more there is any benefit that outweighs the risk of severe liver damage.

Great Tips To Beat Holiday Stress

Holiday Stress Relief New Fairfield CT
The holiday is here!  With the season’s good cheer comes the stress which can lead to tears, neck pain, shoulder pain, and headaches.  This is especially the case at Christmas. The combination of the wrong food, too much alcohol, late nights, rushing around carrying heavy bags, and, let’s say it, family stresses, can all amount to physical overload, taxing not only our physical bodies but our immune systems.   This season let us get prepared and tackle the holidays and be in great shape for the new year!

Great tips to keep you in tip-top condition if you’re going for…

A Marathon Shopping Spree

  • Keep well-hydrated. Drink eight to ten 8-ounce glasses of water every day, and do not substitute any of that with coffee, tea, soft drinks and alcohol, because those are diuretics and will end up robbing you of water.
  • Stretch both before and after a marathon shopping expedition. Shopping can be stressful and your muscles need all the help they can get to stay relaxed.
  • Choose your shopping shoes for their comfort not style. You need plenty of cushioning to counteract those endless hours on your feet.
  • Wear comfortable clothing as well, and, if it’s cold out, have a few layers so you can peel them off and pile them on as you move from the streets to the warm shop interiors and back out again.
  • Wear a fanny pack (aka bumbag) rather than carrying a shoulder bag, and try to keep its contents to the bare minimum.
  • Any slight aches and pains you feel after a day out shopping, grab an ice pack and apply to the affected area for 20 minutes, before removing for at least two hours. Repeat several times over a day or two until you feel better.

A Little Rest and Relaxation

  • When having a serious shopping day, take a break every 45 minutes, or more often if you feel the need.
  • In a mall or a shopping area where lockers are provided, use one to store your shopping bags as you acquire them. Or if you can park close by, drop the bags in the trunk every so often.
  • If you’re hungry, eat something light or you’ll feel very sluggish when you resume shopping. It can also be dangerous to burden your system then continue with what can amount to physical exercise.
  • Coffee may seem like a good idea as a quick boost, but it adds extra stress to the system. As for soda, that’s also not a good idea…ever. Stick with water.

Shopping With Children

  • Children and extended shopping trips don’t go together. Not only will they tire before you do and want to go home, they will want to buy everything in every shop. That’s a double whammy of whining that’s going to stress you out. Try and get someone to look after them instead.

That’s a Wrap

  • When you have a mound of gifts to wrap, make sure you don’t sit or stand in one position for too long, or you’ll start to ache. Vary your position, but avoid wrapping while sitting on the floor, even when carpeted, as this is very bad for your posture.
  • It may sound a little OTT, but stretch before and after wrapping your gifts.
